Emergency Services

Perhaps the best known activity of the Civil Air Patrol is its air search and rescue function and its participation in disaster relief missions. CAP pilots fly approximately 90 percent of all search and rescue missions in this country. CAP has more than 530 aircraft located around the country. Flying activities include:

  • Search and rescue (Air Force missions)
  • Live organ transport
  • Military training route surveys
  • Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) searches
  • Search dog team transports
  • Disaster relief missions
  • State and Federal Agency special requests

Each year, Civil Air Patrol flies approximately 70,000 hours, with 20,000 hours devoted to emergency services missions.
